How I Photograph a Wedding Day

A relaxed, natural approach from a London wedding photographer

The first dance

Every wedding day is different, but the way I photograph them is rooted in the same philosophy: keep things natural and true to who you are.

As a wedding photographer, my goal is to document it as it actually felt. From the quiet moments in the morning to the eruption of energy on dance floor, I take a hands-off approach that allows you and your guests to relax, be yourselves, and genuinely enjoy every moment.

Here’s what a typical wedding day looks like through my lens and with guiding you through your day.

Morning preparations: easing into the day

I usually start the day with one partner (or both, if logistics allow), capturing the calm before the celebration begins. This part of the day is often slower, quieter, and full of anticipation.

Rather than directing or staging moments, I let things unfold naturally:

  • Nervous laughs with friends
  • Final outfit touches
  • Jewellery and accessory details
  • A parent pausing for a moment once the room clears

I don’t expect anyone to “perform” for the camera. I blend into the background, noticing the light, movement, and emotion. Most couples tell me they barely notice I’m there, which is exactly the point.

This relaxed start sets the tone for the rest of the day and helps everyone feel comfortable with me around from early on.

The ceremony: documenting real emotion

Whether your wedding is taking place at a small london registry like Old Marylebone Town Hall, or a countryside gem like Kingston Estate, as your wedding photographer, I’m very aware of how important it is to be respectful and discreet during this part of the day.

I’m looking for:

  • The look on your partner’s face as you walk in
  • A squeeze of the hand
  • Guests wiping away tears
  • Small, unrepeatable reactions

Just honest storytelling with raw emotion.

After the ceremony: natural group photos (without the stress)

Group photos don’t have to feel stiff, painful or long-winded.

I keep this part efficient and relaxed, helping you get the photos you actually want while letting everyone return to celebrating as quickly as possible. Clear direction, good energy, and a bit of humour is what I’m all about.

Once those are done, I step back again capturing all the hugs, congratulations, and spontaneous moments to happen organically.

Couple portraits: relaxed, unposed, and speedy

This is where a lot of couples worry they’ll feel awkward, but it’s usually where they end up having the most fun.

I don’t ask you to pose or “act romantic.” Instead, I give gentle prompts and let you move naturally. Think:

  • Walking together
  • Talking
  • Laughing
  • Taking a quiet breather away from the crowd
  • Dancing

Portraits usually take 15-20 minutes, which is just enough time to allow the space to be yourselves while I capture how you naturally connect.

This approach is especially popular with couples getting married in London, where time and flow matter.

The reception: blending in like a guest

This is where my hands-off approach really shines.

Once the reception starts, I essentially become another wedding guest with a camera. I move through conversations, laughter, clinking glasses, and moments you might not even realise are happening.

I’m watching for:

  • Big laughs
  • Emotional speeches
  • Kids running wild
  • Friends reconnecting
  • Unexpected moments on the dance floor

This is how your gallery ends up feeling alive.

The evening: energy, chaos, and real joy

As the lights dim and the music gets louder, the atmosphere shifts.

Whether it’s wild dancing or quiet conversations outside, I continue photographing in the same natural way. Some of the most meaningful images happen late in the evening when everyone has fully relaxed and forgotten about the camera altogether.

That’s when the real magic tends to happen.

Why this approach works

Couples choose me as their wedding photographer because they want:

  • Natural, emotional images
  • A relaxed experience
  • No awkward posing
  • Someone who fits in, not takes over

By staying hands-off and blending in, I allow your wedding day to feel like your day and not a production.

The result is a gallery that doesn’t just show how your wedding looked, but how it felt. You can View my wedding portfolio to see if we could be the perfect fit.
