As a family photographer, spring is one of my favourite seasons to photograph and not just because everything starts to bloom. Spring brings softer light, fresh energy, and families who are ready to step out of winter hibernation with intention – and I can’t wait to meet you.
If you’re preparing for spring and thinking about family photos, I wanted to share a few of my best tips to help you feel confident, relaxed, and truly enjoy the experience.
Why Spring Is Such a Great Time for Family Photos
Spring light is gentle and flattering, especially during early mornings and golden hour. Nature is naturally doing the styling for us: trees budding, flowers popping up, and neutral outdoor backdrops that don’t overpower your family.
From a photographer’s perspective, spring sessions tend to feel lighter and more playful. Kids have more energy, parents feel refreshed, and that combination almost always leads to more natural, connected images.
It’s All in the Prep
Before your photo session, I always encourage families to think about spring preparation as a reset (it’s practically the unofficial new year after all!)
A few things that help:
- Choose a session date that isn’t packed with other commitments
- Make sure everyone is rested and fed (this matters more than outfits)
- Talk to your kids ahead of time about what to expect so it doesn’t feel stressful. Make it sound fun and I tend to match expectations.
When families arrive relaxed, the session flows like magic.
Outfit Tips I Share With Every Family
One of the most common questions I get is, “What should we wear?”
My advice is always the same: keep it simple, comfortable and true to you.
For spring sessions, I recommend:
- Soft neutrals, pastels, or earthy tones
- Light layers that add texture and movement
- Coordinating colour with family instead of matching outfits exactly
- Clothes you can move, sit, and snuggle in
I send a Style Guide with each session and wrote a piece a while ago on what to wear here.
Having said that, if your kid requests to wear sparkles, a little sparkle never hurt anyone! It’s all about balance.

Trust the Light (and the Process)
I plan sessions around the best light for a reason. That warm, glowing spring light does half the work for us. Windy hair, movement, even cloudy skies can add to the story rather than take away from it.
Location is also a huge factor. That’s why I wrote a blog on my faves around London for Perfect Outdoor Spot for Photo Sessions.
Connection Always Comes First
I’ll guide you and provide prompts that encourage connection: skipping, cuddling, playing, giggling. These moments create images that feel real.
My goal is always for your gallery to reflect what this season of your family actually feels like.
Think of Your Session as Time Together

The families who love their photos the most are the ones who treat their session as an experience, not a task to check off a list.
Just show up, be present and trust the process, I’ll take care of the rest.
Let’s create some beautiful and meaningful spring memories this year.
