When most people think about booking a family photo session, they often imagine standing still, looking at the camera and hoping everyone smiles at the same time. As a family photographer in London, I can tell you that some of the most treasured images rarely happen that way.
The images that families return to time and time again are usually the ones that capture a genuine laugh, a quiet cuddle, a child reaching for their parent’s hand, or the way your little one scrunches up their nose when they smile.
Those are the candid, natural and above all unique moments that will tell your story for many years to come.
What do I mean by Candid and Natural Family Photos?
Candid and natural images is all about capturing real moments as they happen, rather than directing every movement or pose.
That doesn’t mean I leave you standing there wondering what to do. Quite the opposite.
During a family photo session, I’ll gently guide you into situations that encourage connection and playfulness. We might go for a walk, play a game, have a cuddle, tell silly jokes, or simply spend time together and be present.
The result is always a gallery full of genuine moments that reflect who your family truly is and how it felt at the time.

Children Are Happiest When They Can Be Themselves
One of the biggest reasons I favour a natural approach is because children rarely enjoy being told to stand still and smile for long periods. In fact, given half the chance, they tend to do the opposite!
The more pressure we put on children to perform and be “smiley” (or worse “say cheese!”), the less authentic their expressions become. In fact, it is the quickest way to drain the energy from a photo session.
When children are allowed to play, explore, laugh and be silly with the people they love, something magical happens and their personalities shine through. In turn, me and my camera are no longer strangers, but new friends that they try to embrace.
Whether your child is energetic, shy, curious, silly or sensitive, candid images allow them to be exactly who they are. Years from now, those personality-filled moments will mean far more than a perfectly posed smile.

Real Emotion Creates Meaningful Memories
My photo sessions aren’t just about documenting what your family looked like. It’s about remembering how it moment felt. The way your toddler danced with their older sibling. The way your child tightly wraps their arm around your neck. The way your newborn baby sleeps so peacefully in your arms. The giggles that erupted after a tickle attack. The proud smile when your child showed off something they’ve learned recently.
These moments are the one that we will long to remember when we’re older. They happen every day and yet somehow disappear before we realise they’re gone. Natural images preserves those feelings and sentiments.
You Don’t Need To Worry About Feeling Awkward
One of the most common things I hear from parents is: “We’re awkward in front of the camera.” And the good news is that you don’t need to know how to pose. Natural and candid images take the pressure off and instead of focusing on where your hands should go or whether you’re standing correctly, you can focus on spending time with the people you love most.
The best images happen when you’re engaged with your family, not the camera. In fact, you’re better off pretending that I’m not there! As a family photographer, my role is to create a relaxed environment where you can completely forget about being photographed and simply enjoy the experience.
Why I Choose This Approach to Family Photos
My approach is always calm, relaxed and child-led. I’m not opposed to playing a game of hide and seek mid photo session and I absolutely don’t mind taking a break if the moment calls for it – trust me, I get it.
I’ve adapted to different backdrops to make sure my family’s comfort is my number one priority. So whether you want your images taken at home, in your favourite place or in the studio – it’s your photo session, your way.
Of course, we’ll always aim to capture a few images where everyone is looking at the camera if you’d like them. But my favourite images are usually the ones in between or weirdly, with your eyes closed! (Don’t ask me how or why, but it works). Because it isn’t just about creating beautiful pictures. It’s about preserving memories that will only become more valuable with time.
